The sunshine of a hot day in June was a long way from the wet and windy conditions endured during a winter of rugby and the contrast was appreciated by members of the Haywards Heath RFC colts section assembled for their 2008-09 presentations.
Presentations of Player of the Year, Players' Player and Most Improved Player were made by club chairman Alan Jenkins, with head coach Andy Connors describing the outstanding contributions that the players had made to the success of the squad.
He said: "I have been immensely proud of the hard work that all the squad put into the season and the way in which the two age groups joined together to form such a strong colts unit. There have been some significant individual contributions but the highlight was seeing the U17s win their first ever county title for this age group and even more poignant that it was against old rivals Brighton.
"I will never forget the look on the faces of both players and parents who had never experienced winning a county title."
It was also a time to wish good luck to the departing U18s who now formerly move up to join the senior squad, with several of them having already played for the 3rd and 4ths.
The appointment of new seniors lead coach Adam Vander will help further the cause of strong continuity within the club as he was a product of the club's junior and colts development before going on to play professionally and represent England.
