BURGESS HILL'S summer festival got into full swing with a colourful parade.

Groups used costumes and floats to interpret the theme of science, discoveries, and innovation today (june 6)

The day got off to a flying start for the Oakmeeds Day Nursery when members captured first place in the parade for the aviation theme including their own plane.

As an opener to the parade reaching the town centre a mascot race was run down Church Road, won by Alice the Eagle and Peter the Eagle.

The fleet-footed pair drew light-hearted requests from watching Brighton and Hove Albion fans in the large crowd to police to arrest the brightly coloured birds for being Crystal Palace fans.

The festival continues for the next week and opened last night with a pop concert at the Martlets Hall.

Full report in the next edition of the Mid Sussex Times.
