ANOTHER maximum pushed Zeds a point further clear at the top, with hosts United Services the team put to the sword by the champions elect.
A 5k by Graham Daniels accounted for the resolute but hapless Terry Gasson but the next leg between Sparky and Mr Mike started poorly before the Zeds man finally got it together in the latter stages. Barry Timson played a strong game to beat Mick Kirwan but Alan Downs had to rely on some good fortune to defeat Ron Wales. There was a good tussle at the end before Clive Thompson finally edged over the line against the hard-chasing Andy Guy.
Second-placed Plough PG ensured Zeds did not pull too much further ahead as they claimed a good 4-1 home win against Laughing Fish. The match marked the end of Aitch’s 100 per cent record as he succumbed to an 8k from Darren Newnham to make it 4-0 before Andy Brooks spared the brush with a 5k against Chase Newman. The other Plough win included some good scoring as Jan Bithell (5k), Ron Sheridan (6k) and Dave Knight (8k) to see off Les Whiteman, Ray Carpenter and Chris Ashford respectively.
In the World’s End derby, the Bees lost 3-2 ‘at home’ to the As. Big Norm got the As off to a good start as he accounted for Paul Blackburn but it was a closer call when Chris Nikolaj beat The Flying Dutchman to make it 2-0. Geoff Rose did just enough against Gavin Boyd to seal the match early before the Bees showed some sting as Mine Host pulled one back against John Willis and Mark Ridley just squeezed past Kim Stenning.
Bravos picked up a little with a 3-2 home win over Greyhound, who made a good start when Paul Goodwin defeated Nikki Hinkins. It was all square as a 5k from Bravo saw off Trevor Rees and then Bravos sewed up the win when Lynne M-R played well against Peter Burchell and then 5k was enough for Spud Spurrier. Greyhound at least had the last word when Geoff Fairs outpointed Piers O’Sullivan in his first outing of the season.
Saints continued on their downward spiral as they crashed 4-1 at home to a strong Brewers Arms team. Neil Henry was a bit ring rusty as he lost out to The Farmer but TSO restored parity with a none-too-convincing victory over Alan Humphrey. Better play in the latter stages from Dilly gave him the win against Manly Harveys, and Richard Jeffrey comfortably took leg four from Peter Geal to seal the match. The best of the match came from Derek Taylor as he put 5k past a struggling Ray Fofwill.
Hurst B bounced back from the previous week’s whitewash to hand out one of their own to visiting Plough LB. Steve King lorded it over Steve Budd with a fine 6k and Colleen Park beat brother Kieran. Dazza had a great match with Mark Webber before emerging a narrow winner but John Lear won what was a rather low key leg against Rick Hammond. Chris Kirkham was far more convincing in accounting for Steve Whyte to apply the brush.
Woolpack secured another valuable win at Horn’s Lodge, where Dave Tiffin gave the hosts an early lead when beating Anne Stockinger. Nigel Bransby tied it up as he beat Lodge skipper Kevin Stevens and then best of the match came from Malc Fuller as he put 5k past Chris Farrow. Lodge were level when Geoff Winson defeated Jan Hinkins and in the decider John Brocklehurst produced a good frame to see off Roger Dudman.
The Eight Bells match at home to Hurst A was postponed.
