Moorlands, Friar's Gate, near Crowborough is an intriguing four-acre garden set deep in the Ashdown Forest.

A highlight is the small river running through it, into which streams run and off which ponds spread.

Gunneras, primulas, bamboos and other dampland plants abound, while higher up where their feet don't get quite so damp is a large collection of interesting trees and shrubs including many azaleas & rhododendrons.

Beyond, lawns and flower beds, seats and views.

And being open every week gives the visitor the chance to see how the garden evolves during the season - spring flowers now, the flamboyance of the azaleas later, the summer glory of the herbaceous borders and the autumn colour.

Plenty of reasons to return to Moorlands time after time.

Moorlands, Friar's Gate, nr Crowborough TN6 1XF (two miles north of Crowborough, turn off B2188 at Friar's Gate) is open every Wednesday from April 2 to October 29. 11-5pm, adults £4, children free.

As part of the National Gardens Scheme, gardens open for charity. They raise money for Macmillan Cancer, Marie Curie & nursing and gardening charities.
