Improvement works at Chichester's Eastgate Square are finally nearing completion after weeks of traffic delays.
A West Sussex County Council spokesman said road resurfacing was under way, with The Hornet due to be completed last night (Wednesday, July 16)and early today, and the eastern end of East Street between 7.30am and 6pm tomorrow.

East Street will be
closed tomorrow between East Walls and Eastgate Square from 7.30am to 6pm.

"The alternative route for traffic in both directions will be via Market Road and St Johns Street," the spokesman added. "Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times."

The new surfacing works will complete the upgrade of the Eastgate area, where the pavements have been widened and improved in high-quality materials, the pedestrian crossings upgraded and refurbished, trees planted, and new street furniture introduced.

Upgraded and additional lighting is also in the process of being installed.

All the works are being paid for by developer contributions from the former Rowes and Shippams sites, up to an expected total around £630,000.

"When operational, the refurbished pedestrian crossings across Market Road and The Hornet will be of the latest Puffin type," the spokesman said.

"These differ from the previous pelican crossings as the red and green figures are above the nearside push button boxes, and not on the opposite side of the road, and there is no flashing green figure phase."

Cllr Derek Whittington, deputy cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, apologised for the additional time the works had taken to complete.

He said that during excavations, issues were found with some of the existing drainage and they had taken the opportunity to improve it so it discharged underground rather than on to the pavement.
