A search for water voles – the most endangered native mammals in Britain – is being planned across the Manhood peninsula.
Volunteers are being sought by the Manhood action for wildlife project to learn how to look for signs of the animals, on which Wind in the Willows character Ratty was based.
A training session will help participants to distinguish the vole's disti
nctive tracks, droppings and burrows, to survey the creatures.
Manhood wildlife project officer Sarah Hughes will lead the event on Saturday from 10am to 2pm at Pagham Harbour nature reserve. After a presentation and discussion indoors, the volunteers will head to the harbour to look for the voles and their habitats.
Ms Hughes said: "It is so important to know where the voles are living. Numbers have fallen dramatically in recent years.
