Bluebell museum on the move
A NEW museum building for the Bluebell Railway has been constructed at Sheffield Park Station with Heritage Lottery Funding. Volunteers are now moving back many of the large display items temporarily housed in the old museum at Horsted Keynes Station.
Among these are the recently-refurbished collection box dog, ‘London Jack’, and two large models of paddle steamers, Paris and Whippingham. The model ships were refurbished by the National Railway Museum from where they are on long-term loan while their display cases were restored in the Bluebell’s Carriage and Wagon Works.
The move to the new museum building entailed loading the items into a General Utility Van (GUV) at Horsted Keynes and bringing the van down by rail to Sheffield Park Station where it was unloaded close to the new museum.
Assistance with moving the heavy, delicate items was provided by Martells Removals of East Grinstead, which sponsored the move.
Tony Drake, curator of the Bluebell Railway Museum, said it was hoped that the new museum would open its doors to visitors on Saturday, May 28, with an official opening ceremony in June.
Displays and exhibits will show the story from pre-railway to the building of the railways, the golden age of rail travel and the decline of the railways with other features of general interest.
