ROYAL BRITISH LEGION WOMENS SECTION: Our Branch President Celia Baker opened the Meeting, and welcomed Julian Carr(RBL Branch President) and Peter Graysmark(Poppy Appeal Organiser). She then informed Members of the many commemorations which took place over the Remembrance period which she had attended on behalf of our Branch.
Peter Graysmark thanked all those who had been involved in collections and fund raising for the Poppy Appeal. He also gave an amusing talk on the many factors involved in fund raising.
Our Branch Chairman Sarah Voce then presented her Report, which included details of our Programme and activities in 2015.
There then followed a most interesting talk given by Amanda Scales, on the subject of the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, and its time as a Military Hospital housing troops from the Indian Army. Amongst these Troops were the now famous Ghurkas, and we were also surprised to learn that 1 in 3 soldiers in WW1 in the British Army were from India, and were trained by the East India Company. Coming from a warm Continent, these troops were unused to a cold climate and new types of warfare, and as a result, suffered huge casualties with great stoicism.
DATES FOR YOUR DIARY: The first Meeting in 2016 will take place on Tuesday 16th February at the Cyprus Hall.
Bingo will be on December 16th and January 20th at the Cyprus Hall
