A Burgess Hill man has been fined after trying to steal money from a coin machine game, with a large magnet.

Staff at Brighton Pier became suspicious that the man, who lives on West Street, was trying to use a magnet to try to attract 10p coins out of a slot machine.

Sussex Police said officers were called to the Pleasure Dome on the pier at 4pm on April 20.

A police spokesperson said: “A security guard detained Vladimir Ivanov and called police. Ivanov had a large magnet with him but refused to explain in interview what he had been using it for.”

Ivanov, 35, pleaded guilty to going equipped for theft when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on June 18.

He was fined £110 and ordered to pay £215 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. Magistrates ordered the magnet should be destroyed.
