The tenants and landlords of Haywards Heath town centre are invited to a special reception to discuss the future of the town next Tuesday (March 18).

The Haywards Heath Town Team is hosting a free to attend reception from 6pm at the Town Hall, Boltoro Road, for interested parties to find out more and contribute to the town’s continuing development.

The Town Team is a partnership of major employers, town, district and county councillors, relevant council officers (for example, Highways, District Plan, Town Neighbourhood Plan) as well as residents associations and residents.

Chairman Ruth De Mierre of De Mierre Communications said: “As an owner, occupier or indeed an owner occupier of commercial buildings within the town, we would very much like to understand your short and long term plans for your property and see how we can help you to enhance its value and viability.

“It might also be useful for you to learn more of our planned infrastructure developments here and feed in your thoughts?”

David Waite, secretary of the Town Team’s Community Interest Company, hopes the event will start a creative dialogue between all interested parties.

Having lived in the town for 40 years, and with the benefit of 42 years experience as a chartered surveyor, David is well aware of the key issues holding Haywards Heath back.

They include traffic congestion, pedestrian access, parking, as well as an insufficient variety of shops.

He reflected on the fact that virtually every shop on South Road is of a different age, of mixed architecture, and with different owners - hence creating a community with a shared vision is of crucial importance.

“We need to look at how we can refurbish and improve our shops,” he said, “bearing in mind we have no new land to develop new buildings on.

“So it is a question of utilising what we’ve got to make our great town even greater.”
