Roadworks update for Sussex including A23
The Highways Agency has issued this week’s schedule of road works in Sussex and Surrey including those affecting the A23, A26 and A27.
A23 Patcham Interchange Signing Improvements
Work to resurface the road, and alter the existing signs and road markings on the A23/A27 Patcham Interchange continues this week.
The work will take place between 8pm and 6am on Monday to Friday nights. It is due to be completed by next Wednesday, 8 February.
There will be various lane closures in place through the junction. At times throughout the work there will be closures of access from Mill Road Roundabout and the A27 bridge for a maximum of one night each. During these times short fully signed diversion routes will be in place.
A27 Causeway Roundabout to Crossbush Interchange Resurfacing
Resurfacing work on the A27 between Causeway Roundabout and Crossbush Interchange continues this week and is due to be completed by Tuesday 14 February. It will be carried out between 8pm and 6am each night.
Today and Tuesday there will be lane closures, temporary traffic lights and a 40mph speed limit on the A27, with road users escorted past the work at 10mph; access will be maintained to all side roads.

As part of this section of work, from Wednesday 1 until Friday 10 February there will be no access or exit from Queen Street onto the Causeway roundabout. Road users will need to follow a short local diversion route via Ford Road roundabout.
A26 Quarry Hill
An 18-tonne weight restriction is in place on the northbound A26 Quarry Hill Viaduct. The viaduct passes over the A21 and heads into Tonbridge from Tunbridge Wells in Kent.
The restriction is a precautionary measure after routine inspections of the bridge identified that strengthening work may be needed in the future. The weight restriction will protect the integrity of the bridge while this is investigated further.
All vehicles over 18 tonnes will be required to follow a short diversion via the A21 northbound to Morleys Interchange, where they will be directed to return on the southbound carriageway and enter Tonbridge using the southbound exit slip road at Vauxhall Lane Interchange. Bus operators and emergency services vehicles are still able to use the route.
A21 Embankment Repair
Work is being carried out this week to strengthen an embankment on the A21 near Tonbridge in Kent. There are no restrictions on the A21, but parking has been suspended on sections of two local roads near Hildenborough – the B2027 and Lower Street.
A27 Adur Interchange Resurfacing
Work to repair cracks in the road, resurface and replace road markings, road studs and traffic detector loops on the Adur Interchange slip roads in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex continues this week.
It will take place between 8pm until 6am Monday-Friday nights only.
There will be slip road closures with fully signed diversion routes in place. These will direct road users to the next junction to return on the opposite carriageway and use the available slip road.
The work is expected to be complete by Friday 3 February.
A2 Jubilee Way Gantry Replacement and Resurfacing
Work continues to improve journeys on the A2 Jubilee Way near the port of Dover in Kent.
A gantry over the coastbound A2 near the Eastern Docks roundabout will be replaced, and work will then take place in February to resurface the road between the Eastern Docks Roundabout and the Guston Roundabout.
There was a full road closure overnight on Saturday/Sunday for the new gantry to be installed. This will be followed by a closure of the coastbound carriageway only overnight (8pm-6am) today, Monday 30 January.
There will then be no work on the A2 until resurfacing work starts on Monday 6 February.
A21 Upper Haysden Lane Concrete Repairs
Concrete repairs will take place on the Upper Haysden Lane bridge under the A21 near Tonbridge, Kent from Monday 30 January until Friday 10 February between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day.
There will be a single lane closure on the road underneath the A21 with road users being controlled past the work by temporary traffic lights.
A2 Bean Londonbound entry slip road resurfacing
Work to resurface the Londonbound entry slip road on the A2 at Bean, and to install road markings, road studs and traffic detector loops will start on Thursday 2 February and is due to be complete by Tuesday 7 February.
It will be carried out between 8pm and 6am Monday-Friday nights.
It will involve closures of the Londonbound entry slip road. Road users will follow a fully signed diversion route. They will be directed onto the coastbound carriageway to the Ebbsfleet Interchange, to turn around and return on the Londonbound carriageway.
There will be a 50mph speed limit in place on the Londonbound A2 approaching the Bean Interchange.
A259 Rye to Guldeford Resurfacing Part 1
Work starts today, Monday 30 January, for two weeks to resurface the A259 between Rye and Guldeford. Two-way traffic signals will be in place between 9.30am and 3.30pm each day.
Work will then be suspended during the school half-term weeks in Kent and Sussex until Saturday 25 February, when a 400 metre section of the A259 between Camber Road the Guldeford Level Crossing will be closed for two weeks for the second part of the resurfacing to be completed.
A249 Brielle Way
Network Rail will be carrying out maintenance work on the A249 Brielle Way, for five days starting today, Monday 30 January. The work, which involves cleaning drainage channels..
The work will be carried out during daytime hours, between 9.30am and 3.30pm, avoiding the busiest periods. During the work, temporary traffic lights will be in operation.
