Lewes District Council has reassured residents the historic Plumpton level crossing gates will be returned if Permanent Listed Building Consent is not granted, despite the temporary removal.

The council granted Temporary Listed Building Consent to Network Rail to allow the company to work on the gates at the crossing and get the road re-opened as soon as possible.

However, the council has ensured Network Rail provides a legally binding undertaking to re-instate the original gates if listed building consent to remove them permanently is not granted.

Maria Caulfield MP has welcomed the move, which will offer an end to the blockade currently splitting the village in two

She said: “This is welcome progress and I know residents, who have had to endure huge disruption, will be keen to see the crossing reopened as a matter of urgency.

“I understand Network Rail are working with their contractors to understand how soon they will be able to reopen the crossing and I will be pushing for this to happen as soon as possible given the lengthy disruptions local residents have already suffered.

“There is still a long way to go to resolve this sorry situation but this is a welcome step in the right direction. I will continue to do all I can to support the villagers.”

The road is set to re-open in the New Year and a second application (LW/15/0867) that seeks to determine a permanent solution for Plumpton Crossing will be considered by the council’s planning committee in January 2016.
