Driver caught travelling wrong way on M23 with child in back seat

A driver caught travelling the wrong way along the M23 with a child in the back seat has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, police have said.

Officers said a black BMW was stopped after it was spotted driving south on the northbound carriageway between junction 8 and junction 9 at about 10.25pm on Friday (March 17).

The child escaped without any injuries.

Police said a woman in her 40s, was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst over the prescribed limit, dangerous driving and driving a vehicle whilst drunk in charge.

She has been released on bail, pending further enquiries, until April 13.

Meanwhile, officers are investigating a car being driven the wrong way along the A331 Blackwater Valley Route, in Aldershot, on Thursday (March 16) which resulted in a multi-vehicle collision.

Police said the a red Nissan Micra was driving south on the northbound carriageway when it collided with a BMW 530 and a Toyota Prius. The Prius then collided with a Skoda Yeti.

A woman driving the Micra was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting with serious injuries, officers added. The drivers of the other cars received minor injuries.

Inspector Alan Nicholls from Surrey Police’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “Both these incidents are extremely serious and highlight the catastrophic consequences of driving the wrong way on a busy motorway or trunk road. We are urging motorists to exercise extreme caution when using motorways to help avoid any further incidents, which have already left a number of people injured and traumatised.

“We are continuing with our enquiries into both collisions and would urge anyone with any information to come forward as a matter of urgency.”
