Electrician Dean Ferguson and his family have been looking out for the medals since February 25, 2013, after they were among a number of items stolen from a flat in Updown Hill.

His son, Sam, emigrated to the United States on December 27 and Dean said that the one parting gift he would loved to have given him would have been the medals.

“We can obtain replacements from the Army, but it’s not the same as having the originals that were originally pinned on his chest. We’ve been looking out in shops, advertisements and online and we’ve been posting messages on relevant websites in a bid to find them.

“They are a Diamond Jubilee medal and campaign medals for Afghanistan and Iraq. They are all engraved with ‘Lance Corporal Samuel Ferguson 25164131’. Sam is now living in Chicago and I am still determined to reunite him with the originals.”

Detective Constable Julie Beckwith said: “Unfortunately, we have not been able to find either the offender or the items stolen, but this burglary demonstrates the huge emotional effect that such crimes can have on their victims. The medals are not of significant monetary worth, but their sentimental value is incalculable and we would all like to see Sam reunited with them.

“If you have any information about their whereabouts, please call Sussex Police on 101 or email [email protected] [email protected] quoting serial 1482 of 25/02/13. Alternatively, you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 500 111.”
