Police chase between A23 and Hurstpierpoint

Two men were arrested after patrolling police in Mid Sussex spotted a car which had just been stolen in Hove.

At 1.15am on Friday (January 3) the two officers in a patrol car attempted to stop check a blue VW EOS car on the A2300 at Hickstead.

The car sped off and was found abandoned soon afterwards in a field between the A23 and Hurstpierpoint. Three occupants were spotted running off.

In darkness and in bad weather, local officers and dog units searched the area and a while later two men were arrested, hiding in the yard of a builders merchants in nearby Cuckfield Lane, Goddards Green.

The car had been stolen earlier in the night from outside an address in Newtown Road, Hove, after the keys had been taken from inside the front door.

Two men from Hove, aged 19 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently in custody for interview and further enquiries.

Detectives are still making enquiries to try to trace the third man.

Chief Inspector Simon Beardwell, Mid Sussex District commander, said; “This was good work by our officers, and colleagues, working together as a team across the countryside during the night and in very difficult weather.”

Detective Constable Duncan Lloyd of Brighton CID said; “We would like to hear from anyone who saw suspicious activity in Newtown Road before about 1am overnight.”
