Ditchling Downs WI: For the July meeting Danny Banting, a volunteer from the Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth, gave a talk about the Carew family and the Mary Rose. He also takes visitors round the ship dressed in black, a colour of eminence, as Sir George Carew the Vice-Admiral who went down with the ship in 1545. The Vice Admiral has been blamed for the sinking as the most senior officer aboard the Mary Rose along with many theories as to why the ship sunk. But as Danny said, the truth will never be known. It was a most interesting and informative talk. For the meeting in August, Jane Ramsey is giving a talk entitled “For What it’s Worth”. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at the Friends Meeting House at 7pm for 7.30pm. Visitors are very welcome. Any queries, please contact Barbara Dollings on 01273 843892.
St Peter and St James Hospice: Despite competing with Wimbledon finals and grotty weather, the Open Gardens in Ditchling raised a marvellous £650 for the hospice.
