Playgroup staff have put their outstanding Ofsted success down to “a lot of hard work and a lot of dedication”.

Wivelsfield Green Playgroup, in Eastern Road, received top marks across the board following the inspection on June 22, its first in almost four years.

The finding of inspector Susan McCourt were published on July 11, leaving staff and parents delighted.

Ms McCourt’s report stated: “The committee, manager and staff set high standards for themselves and share a set of inspirational values. These values are evident in all aspects of their work and place the needs of the child at the heart of everything they do.”

Lorna Thwaites, of the playgroup committee, said: “We have a completely new team of staff who started two years ago and we all share a very strong vision for how the playgroup should be. Our over-riding sense was very much about love our children and have fun and weave that into everything we do.”

Manager Kay Waterman described the playgroup as “community orientated” and was delighted their relationship with parents, schools and other professionals had been recognised.

The only point raised by Ms McCourt for staff to build on was children’s understanding of the feelings and wishes of those around them. Ms Waterman said the playgroup was already helping children to understand that not everyone wanted the same thing.

She added: “That’s a very poignant one because in September there’s a new [Ofsted] aspect coming in called British Values. Part of that is about respecting each other’s values because, for instance, not everyone wants a cuddle!”
