When plant enthusiast Michelle Renwick from Burgess Hill started at South Downs Nursery it was as a plant assistant but, just three years on, she has moved through the ranks from nursery assistant to become assistant plant manager, with strategic control over the entire plant area which houses everything from colourful bedding plants to trees and shrubs.

The 32-year-old says her passion for plants has grown with her career.

“I originally took the job at South Downs because the family-run business appealed to me,” she explained.

“I liked the idea they would help me get on, and if I shone I would have a good chance to build a career. I also liked the concept of working on the Nursery with British grown plants. Seeing them and being involved with them from seed all the way to a customer walking out and giving them a new home is very rewarding.”

David Finn, Plant Manager at the Hassocks garden centre, who himself rose from a plant assistant to the top job, said he singled out Michelle from the start.

David said: “Michelle has always had an eye for detail and an excellent manner with both customers and fellow colleagues alike. I always thought she would come a long way with us as she is keen to learn and puts her heart into every thing she does.”
