Flawless, immaculate, astounding - Three Days in May is a must see

EVERY TIME actor Warren Clarke opened his mouth and spoke a line during his stunning performance of Winston Churchill at the Theatre Royal Brighton on Monday night, I wanted to clap.

He was appearing in show Three Days in May which takes the audience on a three day journey in May 1940 that changes the course of history forever.

And what a performance he gave – believable, witty, and sometimes emotional, Warren Clarke shone in the star role as newly appointed Prime Minister.

The political thriller by Ben Brown takes the audience behind the doors of 10 Downing Street where some members of the government sit and discuss the option of giving into Hitler.

The show follows Churchill through a part of history seldom studied – where he urgently assembles his war cabinet and finds himself playing a game of ‘political chess’ as he tries to persuade peace treaty supporters that Britain should not give in.

Neville Chamberlain played by Robert Demeger was also superb – Chamberlain looked tired and defeated – exactly what you would expect after losing his standing as leader, and having first hand experience of Hitler’s temperament.

I thought the set was absolutely amazing – a huge map of the world was the backdrop, with the cabinet table neatly positioned in front of it. I honestly felt like I had been transported back in time.

The performances were flawless, the timings immaculate, and the storyline astounding. The audience were completely immersed - and I walked out of the theatre feeling like I had learnt something new about history.

If there is one show you see this autumn, this is it.

Three Days in May runs from Monday September 26 until Saturday October 1. Evenings 7:45pm and Thursday and Saturday matinees at 2:30pm.
