Friends of the Earth backs Balcombe residents as ground swell grows over fracking
FRIENDS of the Earth has today added its reaction to fears about fracking in Mid Sussex.
Following earlier comments by Green MEP for Sussex Keith Taylor (see below), the environmental campaigning group threw in its support for residents in Balcombe who are meeting tonight to hear about the possibility of fracking near them.
Commenting today Tony Bosworth, Climate Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said: “Balcombe residents are right to be concerned about the possibility of fracking in their area.
“Friends of the Earth has been working closely with people living near drilling sites in Lancashire and they have the same worries.
“Even though Cuadrilla says its activities are safe, its drilling has caused earth tremors and there is growing evidence from the US of serious environmental and human health problems from shale gas drilling, including contamination of water supplies with methane and chemicals used in fracking.”
In a press statement, Brenda Pollack, South East Regional Campaigner for Friends of the Earth, added: “Shale gas is being presented as a silver bullet solution to our energy problems, but it won’t help tackle climate change or cut people’s energy bills.
“There should be a moratorium on shale gas exploration and drilling until we have a clear picture of its environmental and human health impacts.
“We need to invest in home-grown renewable energy like wind and solar power to secure UK energy supplies and stabilise our energy bills for the future.”
