‘Generous’ funds for groups


Burgess Hill Town Council has awarded grants totalling £4,962 to voluntary organisations and community groups.

Five hundred pounds was awarded to The Mid Sussex Branch of the Royal Regimental Association to part fund the cost to send war veterans and their families to Priez, France, where they will unveil a monument this September.

Friends of Burgess Hill Green Circle Network was awarded £1000 to help pay for new display panels, nature surveying equipment and the hire of tables for next year’s ‘Wild About Mid Sussex’ event.

The West Sussex Mediation Service was awarded £300. Nick Handley, service co-ordinator, said: “We are most grateful to Burgess Hill Town Council for the generous grant.

“Through our work we are able to make the town a more peaceful and harmonious place to live.”

Action for Deafness, which offers services to the deaf and hard of hearing in West Sussex, was granted £200.

Jane Shaw, CEO, said the grant will part fund the Burgess Hill Deaf Darby and Joan Club’s Christmas party.

She said: “The monthly meetings at Burgess Hill Conservative Club, provide opportunities to get together with friends, play games and to socialise.

“Full communication support is provided at all meetings. The club has an annual summer outing and Christmas party, which the members look forward to.”

Kangaroos, which provides leisure activities for disabled children and young adults in Mid Sussex, was granted £972 to employ a member of staff for a year to help run clubs.

The charity’s projects and funding manager Jenni Herrett, said: “We’ve got over 40 kids accessing the service now and a waiting list of about 14 children. We are the only group like ours in the area. The council has been very generous and supportive.”

Burgess Hill Guide Hall Committee was given a grant of £490. Central and South Sussex Citizens Advice Bureau was granted £1,000.

Cruse Bereavement Care, which provides bereaved people with social opportunities, was awarded £500.

The next grants applications deadline for charities is August 31.
