Carol White, Honorary Poppy Organiser, Clayton & Keymer Royal British Legion writes. I am pleased to let you all know that in November 2015 the Poppy collection to date is £13,685.30 and gets us off to a fantastic start, money given by you all in Hassocks, Clayton, Keymer and Pyecombe will continue to help the many armed forces personnel who still badly need our support. We are very grateful to the pupils, teachers and staff at Downlands, Windmills and The Infant Schools in Hassocks who have always supported The Appeal so well, and all of the local businesses who we thank for allowing us to put our collecting boxes on their premises. Sainsbury’s let us to have a table in their shop this year allowing our collectors to get in out of the cold, and to Hassocks Station for allowing collections there. Thanks are also due to our volunteer collectors (and several new volunteers this year) who turn out to collect in streets and static points throughout the village. They do a fantastic job. In this regard, if you would like to help as a collector next year, please leave your name and contact number at The RBL Club in Woodsland Road 01273 845829 (you don’t need to be a member) and I will be in touch. South Downs Nurseries allowed us to have a table for our collectors in their foyer again and Mark Collins and The Military Vehicles Trust manned the stand at weekends. As this is a very popular sight, it has made a big difference to the monies that we were able to collect for The Poppy Appeal. Funds were also boosted by Church collections from St John The Baptist Church at Clayton and during The Remembrance service at St Edward The Confessor in Lodge Lane, it was great to see so many of you supporting the Parade through the village despite the threat of rain. I wonder how many Poppies on posts you managed to spot around our four villages? There were 28 in all, from Pyecombe to Clayton, Keymer & through Hassocks. Grateful thanks go to Pam & Chris Baker for getting them all out and planted! to Steve at the Pet Shop for managing to keep the one outside his shop upright, to J J Café for covering their patio with poppies making a great display and to Southdown Garden Centre for supplying the 28 posts free of charge. Fantastic. 6 posts and poppies seemed to have gone walkabout! If you happen to spot one on your travels please give The RBL Club a ring and we will happily collect them (we can use them every year now). Thank you all.

I have been producing this column for The Middy since May 2013, but the time has come for me to move on. I am therefore looking for someone who will be able to gather information of the local events going on in Hassocks and send the details by email on a weekly basis to The Middy. If you think this is something you could do, then please contact me at the above and I’ll happily talk you through it. It isn’t time consuming, but does need a weekly commitment. This column will cease after 17th December if cover is not found.
Further details of many more events in the area can also be found at www.hassocksandhurstpierpoint.info
If you would like details of your organisations events published in this column, please email details to firstname.lastname@example.org, or leave a message (voice or text) on 07889 141136. Items for inclusion should be received no later than 10 days prior to the date of publication.
