FORCES sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn is backing a new appeal aimed at helping vulnerable people in Mid Sussex and further afield to overcome fuel poverty this winter.

The campaign, called Surviving Winter, is being organised by the Sussex Community Foundation and was inspired by individuals keen to donate their Winter Fuel Payment from the government to support people less able to pay their fuel bills.

According to the Foundation, more than 4,647 households are living in fuel poverty in Mid Sussex, which equates to 8.6 per cent of households.

The Surviving Winter appeal will channel all the funds raised to provide support to older and vulnerable people who are suffering because of fuel poverty. Many have pledged to donate their Winter Fuel Payment of between £100 and £300.

Dame Vera Lynn, who lives in Ditchling said: “It is a shocking fact that fuel poverty affects many thousands of older and vulnerable people in Sussex and this campaign is a fantastic way for people to help those who cannot afford to pay their fuel bills and will be at risk this winter.

“I would encourage everyone who can afford to donate all or part of their Winter Fuel Allowance to consider doing so.”

Sussex Community Foundation is part of the Surviving Winter Appeal launched across the UK with the support of Saga.
