The CQC has said that services need to be improved at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath.

Both hospitals are run by Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH) NHS Trust.

“Today’s statement from the CQC concerning BSUH, which includes the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital, Haywards Heath is disturbing,” said a statement from Healthwatch.

“It indicates there are serious problems around service quality, patient care and the management and governance in these hospitals.

“Local Healthwatch has been working closely with the Trust to identify how the quality of patient services can be improved.”

It also said they are supporting the Trust in a number of ways, including offering independent reviews of patient services, an independent audit of complaints, and help in using patient experiences to improve patient care.

Healthwatch West Sussex chair Frances Russell said: “We believe local people want us to have excellent hospital services and support the staff at our local hospitals. We do not yet know the exact detail of the issues that concern the CQC but we are under no illusions that they are anything but serious.”
