Millions more needed to fight deadly diseases in children, MEP warns
Sharon Bowles MEP, who represents South East England at the European Parliament, has written to International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell urging him to promote further funding to the GAVI Alliance, an organisation which provides vaccinations against deadly diseases for children in developing countries.
Due to a rise in demand for vaccines, coupled with expected new applications from countries, GAVI’s current funding shortfall is US$3.7 billion for the period 2011 – 2015, yet with full funding GAVI could immunise more than 243 million children in the world’s poorest countries.
Potential donors are to meet at a pledging conference in London on June 13 to make funding commitments.
Sharon Bowles said: “Organisations such as the GAVI Alliance save millions of lives every year and need as much funding as they can get.
“I have written to Andrew Mitchell in support of GAVI’s work and have asked him to push for the forthcoming GAVI pledging conference to be included on the formal agenda of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on May 24.
“With GAVI on the EU Foreign Affairs Council agenda EU ministers can learn more of GAVI’s work and, I hope, encourage potential donors to make big contributions.”
