The unit is being redesigned and modernised to improve care for the babies and update support facilties for their parents.

The changes, which will allow staff to care for the babies more easily and effectively, are expected to be finished later this year or early next year.

Meanwhile, a number of fundraising events are already under way - a cake sale is being organised by some of the medical team at the unit and will be held on Tuesday in the hospital foyer.

A 16-mile walk is to be held on Saturday from the hospital’s associated Intensive Care Unit, the Trevor Mann Baby Unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, to the Princess Royal Hospital.

And a fundraising pub quiz night is being held on Friday July 15 at Sharpthorne Club near East Grinstead from 7pm.

Lisa Kaiser, who is among staff working at the special care baby unit, said: “The improved facilites will make a major contribution to the way the medical team care for babies and support families. With a larger joint nursery and a dedicated Intensive Care Space, it will be possible to provide care for babies with a wider range of needs.”
