Mid Sussex Wellbeing team visited the Circle Club at Worth Abbey to promote the services for older people that are featured in the council’s new Community Connections directory.
The Circle Club was set up by the Worth Abbey Charitable Trust and meets every Tuesday at Worth Abbey. It is open to everyone aged over 65, at a cost of £6 per day with lunch cooked by the Worth School chefs included.
The Mid Sussex Community Connections directory provides contact information for local organisations that offer help to elderly people. The booklet makes it easier for those who do not want to use the internt to access support services.
Support offered by voluntary organisations ranges from help with escorted shopping to gardening or small jobs around the house. Other organisations help elderly people to stay independent at home, get financial and pension advice, arrange free public transport or can provide help with sight loss.
Others give advice on issues such as losing weight, healthy eating, giving up smoking, becoming more active, cutting down on drinking and managing stress.
Mid Sussex Wellbeing advisor Jann Palmer gave a copy of the directory to every member of the club.
Cllr Christopher Snowling, Cabinet Member for Health and Community said: “Support is there for older people if they need it and we want to make sure that everybody knows about the help that’s available.
“Our Community Connections Directory lists the contact details of our local support organisations and offers a brief explanation of the services they provide.
“We update it regularly to make sure our residents have the latest information and we encourage older people to keep a copy handy.
“The kind-hearted volunteers and members of staff who work for these support organisations are keen to help older people to make the most of later life.”
The Community Connections Directory of Services is available from Mid Sussex District Council, Help Points in Burgess Hill, East Grinstead and Haywards Heath and libraries. It is also online at www.midsussex.gov.uk/communityconnections.
