Following the demise of Countryliner on Monday 8th October, it appeared that there could be a disaster for local transport.
Instead, to my amazement, there was, effectively, a full bus service running in Haywards Heath by the Tuesday. The only difference by Wednesday was the introduction of Southdown PSV on the 30 route.
I am aware that the vast majority of the work that made this possible fell to Bill Leath and his team at WSCC. Like most people, I cannot begin to think about the work involved in cancelling Countryliner’s contracts, sending out emergency tenders and then awarding the contracts within the space of 24 hours. Presumably there is an emergency plan in place for this kind of emergency - if this is the case, it worked superbly.
Please would you pass on to Bill and his team my thanks and those of the residents in Mid Sussex who rely on public transport - many of whom have commented to me about it.
I would also like to thank, through WSCC, the bus companies taking over in the Mid Sussex area who likewise did an excellent job of having the new routes in place within 24/48 hours respectively.
