Over 1 million pound investment at Haywards Heath's railway station site

Haywards Heath’s outdated 1930s station has undergone £1million improvements with plans in the pipeline to improve the forecourt and the front of the building.

The booking hall has been re-designed with a new café. The main subway has been improved with a new lining, better lighting and automatic ticket barriers and there are updated consumer information systems.

The station has also undergone a deep clean and waiting rooms and toilets have been refurbished. There are new information screens, in addition to real-time bus departure information.

There will be further improvements as part of an ambitious scheme to re-develop the whole station site.

Planning approval has been granted by Mid Sussex District Council for a Waitrose supermarket with restaurant space and a new multi-storey car park for shoppers and commuters.

As part of the scheme, the layout at the front of the station will be altered with new taxi ranks, and the exterior of the station building will be refurbished.

Commenting on the £1million improvements inside the station complex, Southern’s managing director Chris Burchell said: “Haywards Heath station had for some time been in need of improved facilities so we have delivered not only what our passengers asked us to, but much more besides.”

Town mayor, John Sabin, marked the improvements by cutting a ribbon.
