475 home plan ‘firmly rejected’

Burgess Hill Town Council has recommended refusal to an application for the first phase of a 475 home development.

Residents filled out the public gallery at the council’s chambers last week as they came to voice their strong opposition to an application to build 125 homes on the former Keymer Brick and Tile site.

The town council recommended Mid Sussex District Council, the planning authority, reject the application.

Linda Church, of Wyvern Way, who set up a residents’ group for those opposing the application, said that people were ‘delighted’ with the result.

She said: “The town council firmly rejected the application.

“We are relieved and happy and having a breather but obviously it’s onward and upward.

“The chamber was completely full and quite a few people were turned away because there was no room.”

The plan is likely to go to district council in October for a final decision.

Linda said: “We will need to continue our fight until it goes to district so people must keep sending in their comments and concerns.”

The outline plan for the development of 475 homes was given permission in 2010.

Linda said more than five residents spoke at the council meeting - more than is ordinarily allowed due to the large amount of interest in the subject.

Linda has told the Middy that residents’ main reasons for objecting to the application were; the plan to use Wyvern Way and Curf Way as access roads and a lack of community assets.

The developer Croudace Homes has said community facilities and green space will be provided within a certain stage of development.

The spokesperson said: “There has never been a requirement to provide the community facilities and green space with the first phase application.

“However, the reserved matters application for the community facilities will follow the current submission. The location of the first phase will not affect bringing those facilities forward for the benefit of future residents.”
