A diet of prunes is the key to a long life says 100-year-old
A healthy diet of prunes and porridge is what a 100-year-old says is the secret to his longevity.
Fred Hockey, who lives in Western Road, Haywards Heath, was born in Somerset.
At the age of 15 he moved to Bournemouth where he worked as a commis waiter for a few years before moving to London and working at the Royal Palace Hotel in Kensington and the Regina Hotel in Paris where he learnt to speak French.
In 1940 he joined the Army and was stationed in Egypt and Italy.
In 1944 he married his beloved Olive and they had two children, Pauline and Ian.
His granddaughter Nicola said: “He loves his daily news and is often seen with his head in a newspaper, or imparting his experiences and knowledge to his family.
“He is also determinedly independent.”
After the war Fred returned to hospitality and worked as head barman at The Number Ten Club (Institute of Directors) for nearly 15 years.
Nicola said: “He often reminisces on these years and of the interesting clientele he met.”
He moved to Sussex in 1996 and has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
