Air training cadets are high-flyers in county-wide competition

Talented air cadets from Burgess Hill won five first places in a Sussex-wide contest as well as taking other places in the competition.
Their success came in the Air Cadets Annual competition held at Crowborough and was a good lead-in to their open evening last week at their squadron hut in the Oakmeeds Community College grounds.
The competition is held annually at Crowborough and all 23 Squadrons throughout Sussex Wings Air Cadets get together to compete in various competitions including Foot Drill, Banner Drill, First Aid, Aero Modelling, Photographic, Marching Band, Percussion Section and Adventure Training, the last one usually involving getting wet and muddy.
This year the 2529 (Burgess Hill) Squadron did very well indeed with its best results including winning the Full Marching Band;Percussion Section (Corps of Drums), Ensemble Section comprising of a full drum kit, keyboard, accoustic guitar and vocals to a Bruno Mars Song “Just the way you are”; the Aero Modelling Diaramma Competition which shows the landing of the Horsa Glider Near Pegasus Bridge, Arnham in Wolrd War Two; and the over- 16 Photographic Competition.
The squadron also did very well in all the other competitions.

The cadets will now attend the region competitions held at RAF Northolt representing Sussex Wing against five more Regions. They are hoping after a successful open evening to recruit some cadets and staff in civilian or uniformed role.

Many members get such enjoyment from the ATC that they go on to join the Royal Air Force, or other services, although the regular meetings are not intended as recruiting sessions.
The enrolment age for the Air Training Corps is 13 years and three months, however cadets can join at the age of 13 and enter as Junior cadets.
When the cadet reaches the age of 18, they are appointed to the position of staff (previously instructor) cadet and are subjected to the same regulations as adult members of staff.
