Artist set up exhibition to promote Hastings

An artist and photographer has set up an exhibition with the aim of promoting Hastings.

Gavin Luker, 40, decided to take the pictures of various areas around town at night to counteract the perception in the national media of Hastings being run down.

The collection of around 30 shots is on display in the Tablet Gallery in George Street, Old Town.

Mr Luker, who has been a professional photographer for 10 years and an artist for 20, said: "Hastings is always seen in a bad light so I decided to take these night shots to show the town in a new light.

"Some of the shots took three months to take as each photograph has to be just right. I am very particular about everything."

Examples of photographs on display include a view of the Old Town from the West Hill and Marine Court from the beach.

Mr Luker said: "Since the recession started it has been difficult for the traders in Old Town and High Street so Hastings needs some good publicity.

"I want people to come to the gallery to look at the artwork. The gallery is free.

"Hastings people who have visited the exhibition have said they love the photographs. People have also come from London and the reaction I have received has been one of amazement.

"They have been impressed by the amount of detail in each photograph."

Some of the large photographs are on sale for 275 but smaller ones can be bought for 1.

Mr Luker has work displayed in permanent exhibitions across the country, including shots of London at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 2.

Dr Justin Reid, who owns the Tablet Gallery, said: "The closure of the pier, East Hill lift, and the general economic climate give Hastings a rather 'run down' appearance.

"However Mr Luker's urban and landscape photographs of Hastings and the surrounding areas show it in a new light.

"His canvasses are selling like hot cakes."

The exhibition is open from 11am to 5pm on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
