Audit Commission called in for Mid Sussex plans

THE AUDIT Commission – the watchdog that scrutinises public authority spending – has been asked to investigate key finances behind Mid Sussex District Council's crisis-hit town centre redevelopment plans.

This week the council issued a statement repeating its assertion that costs involved in preparing the redevelopment proposals lay "entirely" with its partner, Thornfield Properties.

Yet, in a separate document distributed to councillors, MSDC's chief executive John Jory confirms that last September it did repay monies it "owed" to Thornfield – with interest and costs – amounting to 1,042,000.
