Balcombe's Victory Hall murals discussed

BALCOMBE'S famous post-World War One frescos by artist Neville Lytton are the subject of a talk on Wednesday night (February 25).

Entitled The Murals at the Victory Hall it takes place in the shadow of the frescos in the Victory Hall in Stockcroft Road, Balcombe, starting at 8pm.

The event is organised by Cuckfield Museum in conjunction with the newly-formed Balcombe Historical Society.

The paintings by Lytton, which depict the two extremes of war and peace, date back to the 1920s and show exhausted and injured soldiers on one side of the hall while on the other, women and children are seen with landowners later discussing the building of the Victory Hall to commemorate those who fought.

Many of the faces are of local people who lived in and around Balcombe at the time.

The talk will include a section given by retired teacher Paul Gordon, who will speak on the war theme of the murals, and another by former parish council chairman and history expert Joan Dutton, who will explain the characters on the peace side.

Tickets are 3 and to book a place at the talk contact Phillipa Malins on 01444 452307.
