BBQ boom leads to burnt out bins

A host of litter and dog mess bins have been burnt out as sun worshipping locals dumped their disposable barbecues in them.

According to Hastings Borough Council, around a dozen bins have had to replaced in the last few weeks and, despite this week's torrential rain, the local authority is expecting the problem to get even worse.

With summer fast approaching more and more people are heading outdoors to enjoy a barbecue with friends. However, the local authority is warning people to be careful in how they get rid of the barbecue afterwards.

Councillor Roy Tucker, who is responsible for waste and recycling, said: "It's really important that dog and litter bins are used properly.

"Putting something that's burning in a plastic bin is extremely dangerous and ultimately costs Council Tax payers money as we have to replace the bin.

"If this continues we may have to look into some kind of enforcement action which, of course, will also cost money.

"We'd urge people to help us avoid this situation by being a little more sensible and a lot more considerate towards other residents."

And council spokesman Caroline Kelly was careful to remind people exactly when and where they are allowed to barbecue.

She said barbecues on the beach were allowed at any time as long as it was using a proper manufactured barbecue. Open fires and bonfire type barbecues are also allowed, but only until 8pm or dusk if earlier.

Mrs Kelly added: "We encourage people to use the beach between groynes 47 and 51a at Sea Road in St Leonards (adjacent to West Marina Gardens).

"Please remember the damage and personal injury that fires of any type can cause and also that stones on the beach can explode when heated during a bonfire."

However the spokesman said it was not the same for local parks after areas such as Alexandra Park and Linton Gardens had seen a flurry of recent barbecue parties.

She said: "We don't encourage barbecues in parks unless there are specially designated areas, such as in the country park."
