Bid to make Hassocks a plastic bag free zone

A small group of volunteers is leading the way in a bid to make Hassocks a plastic bag free zone.

Supporters of Humanity at Heart are spearheading a campaign to banish the non eco-friendly bags from the village.

Michelle Ellel, the charity's fundraising and project co-ordinator, is hoping they can raise awareness about the scale of environmental destruction caused by plastic bags.

They are kicking off the campaign by selling textile bags at their Keymer Parade charity shop and hope to go totally plastic-bag free by June.

They have already sold 10 cloth carrier bags made by hard-working volunteer Marion White and hope in the future they may be able to produce the bags in Romania for sale here to support their work with disadvantaged communities there.

Michelle has written to Hassocks Amenity Association, the parish council, Hassocks Community Partnership and the local branch of the Field Society to get the ball rolling in the hope that word will spread and the whole of Hassocks will support this campaign.
