Big retirement development gets the go ahead.
CONTROVERSIAL plans for a big retirement development on the outskirts of Haywards Heath have been approved by a district planning committee, despite concerns about its location in the strategic gap between Haywards Heath and Cuckfield.
The proposal, in outline form, is for a residential care home, a care home with facilities for people with dementia, up to 13 retirement bungalows and a state-of-the art community building for Age UK to move to from its current centre next to Clair Hall off Perrymount Road.
The location is on 2.3 hectares of Greenfield land to the west of Beech Hurst Garden off Butlers Green Road.
Cabinet member for Regeneration and Planning, Gary Marsh, said: “The committee made a balanced judgement, weighing the location of the proposed development, in the strategic gap between Haywards Heath and Cuckfield, against the needs of the community for a new Age Concern facility and accommodation that is suited to older people.
“Mid Sussex has a growing population of older residents and accommodation that is dedicated to the care of older people is in short supply. This situation is reflected in Haywards Heath and the town council expressed strong support for this facility.
“It was not an easy decision but ultimately, the high demand for these facilities and the many benefits they will bring to the local community was deemed the most important consideration.”
The eighteen member planning committee includes two representatives from Haywards Heath and one from Cuckfield.
The outline proposal was submitted by Boyer Planning on behalf of landowner W.T Lamb Holdings. The committee made its decision last Thursday.
