Police are investigating a potentially linked series of burglaries at Co-op stores across the county after cigarettes were stolen in a raid in Saltdean and three men were arrested in Eastbourne.

Officers were called to the store in Longridge Road, Saltdean, at 4.11am today (Friday March 8) after a member of the public became suspicious of a silver Subaru vehicle and spotted three men loading items into the boot. The car then drove off at speed west along the A259 towards Rottingdean.

Three men were arrested in the early hours of this morning when a sharp-eyed police dog handler spotted a break-in taking place at a Co-op in Eastbourne.

The officer was on vehicle patrol in Eastbourne Old Town when she passed the store in Albert Parade, Green Street at around 1am and alerted by an alarm sounding, spotted that a glass panel in a door had been smashed. She sent her police dog into the building and as other units arrived, three men were discovered inside and arrested on suspicion of burglary.

Two men, aged 21 and 24, from Slough and a 23-year-old man from High Wycombe were in custody at Eastbourne on Friday lunchtime.

Elsewhere, police are looking at a possible attempted break-in at a Co-op store in Goring Road, Worthing, around 11pm yesterday (Thursday).

They are also considering whether a break-in to the Oakstead Service Station in Ifield Drive, Crawley, where a quantity of cigarettes was stolen on Thursday around 11.45pm, is connected. Witnesses or anyone with information about this incident are asked to call 101 quoting serial 1742 of 07/03 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

On Monday (March 4), two vehicles were used in a ram raid on a Co-op store in Bolnore Village at Haywards Heath, with raiders making off with an ATM cash machine.

Anyone who witnessed the Saltdean incident or saw the Subaru car in or around the area is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 131 of 08/03.

Anyone who saw anything suspicious in the Eastbourne around the time of the raid or perhaps during the day or so before is asked to call Sussex Police on 101 quoting serial 43 of 08/03.
