Boys aim high with footie marathon

Waiting for Video...

The beautiful game may not have felt so wonderful at the end of a 24-hour football marathon played in the wind and rain at St Paul’s Catholic College, Burgess Hill.

More than 30 lads did their best to play competitively from 7pm on Sunday night to 7pm on Monday after being inspired by the courage of leukaemia victim Angus Rowland.

Angus, from Stapelfield, was a pupil at St Paul’s but died aged only 14 in May 2011.

Since then his family have set up the Angus Rowland Forgetmenot Fund for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research with many thousands already having been raised.

The footie marathon on the Astroturf on Sunday and Monday was also raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust and was organised by friends Alex Beard, Matt Buglass, Joe Campbell and Will Jex.

Mum Sarah Palser, whose younger son, Sam, aged 16, was one of the players, was there to see the finish.

Sarah said: “Everyone was on such a high at the end. They struggled at times during the 24-hours but they tried to play competitively as much as they could.

“It was particularly lovely at the end because Angus’s parents were there and they presented the medals to all the players which made it very special for them.”

Sarah said she thought online giving had raised around £2,500 with the boys hoping to reach £3,000.

Donations can be made by contacting St Paul’s on 01444 873898 or on Joe Campbell’s web page at www.justgiving.com/Joe-Campbell2 or by texting “BALL96” followed by the amount to 70070.
