Brave man set to climb Mount Everest despite injuries
A MAN who was in collision with a car as he walked his girlfriend to the railway station says he is determined to still climb Mount Everest despite his injuries.
Krishna Mooroogen, 22, from Penland Road, Haywards Heath, who goes to Royal Holloway University in Surrey, was walking his girlfriend to Egham station when the accident happened just before Christmas.
He suffered injuries to his legs and spent the Christmas holidays in a wheelchair and on crutches.
Krishna said: “I hit the bonnet and rolled off the car. I fell onto the road. I lay there and then thought I was OK and tried to sit up. I remember I tried to ask people to put something on my foot. Somehow my shoe had come off and my foot was freezing.
“I was put in an ambulance and taken to the accident and emergency department. I had some problems walking. Both knees were heavily swollen; I was staggering around like a drunk person.
“I had to use crutches and also had to use a wheelchair. I have now begun my first recovery and I am now having physiotherapy.”
Krishna said he had been preparing to climb Mount Everest southern base camp in June to raise funds for Childreach International but due to his accident had to take a step back.
He said: “Being in a wheelchair for a few days really gave an interesting perspective on what it would be like to be really disadvantaged, especially how people treat you.
“In some ways it was a good experience as I will no doubt be raising money for disadvantaged children.
“I began fundraising in November with an aim to spend the holiday break bucketing and raising money.
“Due to my accident I have not been able to get out and raise some money, and have had to resort to an email campaign.
“I haven’t been able to do any preparation at all, I am hoping with my rehabilitation and things I will be able to start exercising again.
“I am hoping I will be able to get everything back on track again, otherwise someone will have to take my place, and I don’t want that to happen! I am doing everything I can.
“I am also a mixed martial artist and president of my university club – this injury has also now removed my chances of competing nationally this year.”
Krishna has set a target of raising £588 by January 25, £2,400 by April and an overall target of £3,000.
