Bright future ahead for shopping centre
‘The only way is up’ for Haywards Heath as a big retailer pledges to stay in the town and a sought-after designer joins the market.
Marks and Spencer has renewed their lease to stay in The Orchards shopping centre.
Nicola Bird, Orchards centre manager, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Marks and Spencer has renewed their commitment to The Orchards and to our town; following on from the good Christmas news from our retailers, I’m convinced the only way is up for Haywards Heath.”
John de Mierre, Mid Sussex District Council cabinet member for economic development said: “We’re delighted to learn that Marks and Spencer have extended their lease in The Orchards.
“The store has always been a flagship for The Orchards and is at the heart of the shopping centre’s popularity. This commitment to the town underlines its potential and I hope will help attract more retail investment.”
As well as M&S, a design talent chosen by Harvey Nichols and Alexander McQueen has set up shop in The Orchards Market every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Paul Badham Designs produces metal work designs ranging from candleholders to giant insects .
Nicola said: “Paul’s work is sensational and while he gets massive commissions for major installations, he is as dedicated to offering smaller works to private customers, which will be available on his stall here. We’re really lucky to have such a high profile talent in The Orchards.”
Paul has created inspirational designs, many of which have appeared in the public eye.
His ‘globe’ design heralds BBC’s Newsnight, appearing in the open credits; Selfridges Menswear Department and shop windows were graced with 30 different sized steel cacti, while Harvey Nichols, world renowned for its window dressing, used 12 of Paul’s giant insects to feature in a display of Alexander McQueen Designs.
Paul takes on plenty of private work, too, and has many commissions from 18 hand steel horses to cacti candle holders, with everything from sculptured telephones to stainless steel swans in between.
Nicola added: “With all the plans we have for The Orchards in 2013 and beyond, I’m looking forward to making this the UK’s very best shopping centre for the whole community.”
The video shows Paul’s work at the market.
