Oakmeeds Community College played host to a number of businesses from across Sussex, as part of their enrichment day.

More than 30 business people from companies such as American Express, Atkins Global, 1st Central Insurance, KPMG and Waitrose took part in a two-hour speed networking session with the Station Road year nine students.

Professional firms, such as solicitors and surveyors, engineering, new media, IT, recruitment, and advertising and PR companies were also represented.

The business people moved round 27 tables where groups of three to five students interviewed them in a bid to learn about their businesses.

Head teacher Colin Taylor said: “The college’s regular enrichment day shows our close links with business and the community. This presents an unrivalled opportunity for students to interact with the outside world, to learn about opportunities, and to demonstrate their talents and commitment. It also allows representatives of the local business community to see for themselves the strengths of the students.”

Steve Tasker, of engineering group Atkins Global, whose son attends Oakmeeds, said: “It was a real pleasure to discuss architecture and engineering careers with the students. Students were curious, enthusiastic and engaging, and they asked some great questions. A real credit to themselves, the teachers and the school.”
