One of Britain’s most famous and historic luxury hotels has been rebuilt - in gingerbread.

Amberley Castle is some 900 years old and one of the county’s most famous and distinguished landmarks, nestled between the South Downs and the Wildbrooks.

Now its image has been captured in a form that will not last as long - but has the power to transform lives.

The castle’s pastry chef Marcus Tschierschke has created the 1 to 100 scale and is using it to raise money for the Brighton-based Rockinghorse Children’s Charity - which aims to improve the lives of sick children throughout Sussex.

Marcus said: “From the first moment I came to Amberley Castle I knew it was a special and magical place, and I still have this feeling of wonderment and awe every time I see the castle. I wanted to share my love and passion for this historical and beautiful property through my art of baking.

“As I delved into the history of the castle It came to my attention that the former owner Lady Emmet was a patron of many children charities and used to have the local children to high tea at the castle. Hence I thought it appropriate if we carried on this tradition and after seeing all the fantastic work the Rockinghorse charity does I set to work to make the gingerbread castle.”

Rocking horse has been supporting children for over 45 years. It was set up in 1967 by Dr Trevor Mann, who recognised there was a real need for additional resources to improve healthcare services for sick children and babies.

Guests at the castle will have the opportunity to view Marcus’s amazing creation - and to contribute to the good cause. They can also donate to the charity at www.rockinghorse.org.uk
