Conservatives win both seats in Haywards Heath by-elections

Conservatives won seats formerly held by the party in two by-elections in Haywards Heath.

Rod Clarke took the Franklands ward seat on Mid Sussex District Council and fellow Conservative Stephen Hillier won the vacant Haywards Heath East Division seat on West Sussex County Council.

The result leaves the political make-up of both councils unchanged.

The full results are: Franklands ward Mid Sussex District Council: Rod Clarke (Conservative) 414 (elected), Howard Burrell (UKIP) 269, Miranda Diboll (Green Party Stop Fracking Now) 31, Anne-Marie Lucraft (Lib Dem) 91, Greg Mountain (Labour) 103.

Haywards Heath East Division West Sussex County Council: Stephen Hillier (Conservative) 649 (elected), Paul Brown (Green Party Stop Fracking Now) 55, Charles Burrell (UKIP) 576, Richard Goddard (Labour) 346, Anne Hall (Lib Dem) 201.

The turnout of voters was 23.1 per cent in East Division and 24.8 per cent in Franklands Ward.

The elections were called after the death of councillor John De Mierre, who held both the seats for the Conservatives.
