Nearly £400 has been raised for a church upgrade and for a charity helping victims of Parkinson’s Disease at a civic occasion hosted by Mid Sussex District Council chairman, Cllr Mandy Thomas-Atkin.

The chairman held this year’s annual Civic Service at St John’s Church in Burgess Hill where she was joined by the Venerable Roger Combes, Archdeacon of Horsham, Andrewjohn Stephenson Clarke, the High Sheriff of West Sussex, and Martin King, vice-president of the Mid Sussex branch of Parkinson’s UK.

The gathering was also attended by the mayors of Crawley and Worthing borough councils and the chairmen of Arun, Chichester, Lewes, and Horsham district councils.

The Candlemas Choral Evensong service was officiated by Father Kevin O’Brien and director of music, Mr James L Thomas, produced an Organ Voluntary.

The retiring collection raised more than £390 to be divided equally between St John’s and the Mid Sussex Branch of Parkinson’s UK, the charity supported by the Mrs Thomas-Atkin.

“It was really pleasing to be able to bring so many people together for this wonderful service,” said Cllr Thomas-Atkin. “This year marks the 150th anniversary of St John’s Church in Burgess Hill and I cannot think of a more fitting venue for my final Civic Service as Chairman.”
