Rotarians have taken up the challenge to fund the £5,300 running cost of a day at St Peter & St James Hospice at North Chailey.
For 30 years, members of the Rotary Club of Cuckfield & Lindfield have been strong supporters of the hospice, each year donating some of the money they raised.
The sums donated have varied but the rotarians have decided to pledge to fund an entire day’s operation for the hospice for this year.
Club community service chairman Chris Kinnear said: “It is important for an organisation like this to have an assured stream of funding, rather than just relying on ad-hoc events.”
Chris is also treasurer of the Hike-for-Hospices charity which holds an annual walking event on the South Downs Way, in aid of local hospices,
which is run by a team from several rotary clubs in the area.
At the Plumpton Christmas Race meeting, £500 was raised for the hospice as a starter. The remaining £4,800 will be raised by the annual Darts Marathon the club runs during February, March and April.
Head of fundraising for the hospice Gill Cronin said: “We are delighted with this pledge form the rotary club, raising funds to run the hospice is an ongoing struggle and it is a great relief to have an element of assured income.”
The pledge to fund a day was made on February 23, which is, ‘Rotary Day,’ the anniversary of the founding of Rotary International in 1905. For more about the local club go to the website at www.rotarysussex.org, or call Barry Reed on 01825 790402
