DAVE'S FIXED UP A NEW LIFE
LONG-SERVING school caretaker Dave Smith has retired after 29 years as "Mr Fix It" at Warden Park.
Dave, 64, left the 1,500 pupil school last week and will soon be joining wife, Alison, in Turkey where they are setting up home.
Alison, who works for a travel agent, flew out earlier this year and Dave is tying up ends at their Cuckfield home before heading out to begin their new life.
"We've been going out there for holidays for about 10 years and we like the place and the people," he said.
Dave said his years at Warden Park had always been enjoyable with rarely a dull day and constant variety with the turnover of pupils and staff.
"I've always enjoyed it here," he said. "It has been like a big family. The kids are nice; you get the odd one or two, but mostly they are a good crowd."
Over the years Dave has seen many changes in the school premises, which he has been responsible for securing, maintaining and ensuring safety in.
The campus of buildings has expanded dramatically in the last three years with the opening of the Brian Webb sports hall and the new 13 classroom 1.5million maths block.
