A proposed housing development will add up to an influx of 1,000 new residents into one of Mid Sussex’s premier villages, according to opponents.

They say that together with other new home building that has taken place in Lindfield over the last few years, there will have been a 20 per cent increase in its population with an accompanying 600 additional vehicles.

Members of Lindfield Preservation Society are now urging people to write to Mid Sussex District Council’s Planning Department and object to the proposal by Wates Developments by the February 8 deadline.

Wates is applying for 230 homes on 14 different parcels of land off Gravelye Lane, Scaynes Hill Road, Lyoth Lane and Langmore Lane. The sites border Scaynes Hill and Walstead.

In a statement, the society says: “This kind of speculative development is grossly disproportionate to the scale of our village and the capacity of its infrastructure.

“Nor is there any need for it. There are currently approved sites for more than 4,000 homes in Mid Sussex, which developers have not taken up.

“This should be more than enough for them to be getting on with, especially as the historical completion rate is c.400 houses per year.”
