Driver on A272 Haywards Heath caught helping child with homework while on move

A driver on one of the busiest roads in Sussex was helping with a child’s homework while on the move when stopped by police.

The shocking disovery was made when police checks were carried out on the A272 in Haywards Heath.

Police reprimanded the driver for being distracted and also found four drivers using mobile telephones and 18 people not wearing seatbelts.

Operation Airwalk which targets drivers for mobile phone and seatbelt offences also resulted in three people being arrested on suspicion of fraud.

Officers from the Roads Policing Unit, Neighbourhood Policing Team and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service were involved in a joint operation between 8am and 9.15am at Beech Hurst, Haywards Heath yesterday when a Ford Transit flatbed was stopped due a passenger not wearing a seatbelt. Further inquiries revealed that the occupants of the vehcile had been involved in theft by false representation the previous day in Wilfred Road, Hove.

Sergeant Rachel Mundy from the neighbourhood policing team said: “The operation is aimed at educating drivers using mobile phones and both drivers and passengers found not wearing seat belts. Each offender is given the option of an on-the-spot fixed penalty notice or to take time out to view a fire service presentation demonstrating the potential consequences of their offences. Fire officers offer their own personal experiences to highlight the dangers and reinforce the messages.”

Operation Airwalk will continue throughout the Mid Sussex District for the remainder of February.

If you wish to report road related issues, Operation Crackdown is a free on-line service where the public can identify dangerous road users, report drivers for mobile phone use or no seat belt and report offences such as untaxed and abandoned vehicles. All reports submitted are processed by the road policing unit.
